Places You HAVE to try when visiting JB

Although Johor Bahru is not as popular as Malacca and Penang Island among foodies,Jb still offers a variety of local delicacies to cater people from different walks of life.

While many adhere to the quote ‘eat to live’, as Malaysians, we live to eat. Every time, I make a trip to my hometown which is Johor Bahru(JB), I would make a mental list of the eateries to fit into my schedule.

Below is a compilation of restaurants,I would make sure to stop by every time I visit my hometown. 🔻🔻🔻🔻🔻

1. Seng Steam Fish Restaurant

As the restaurant's name suggests, this place is famous among locals for their fish dishes. It is always busy especially during lunch hour but fear not as the food is served fast.On regular basis ,the food will arrive between 5-10 minutes. The best dish is the  crispy deep fried fish drizzled with mayonnaise together with sweet and sour sauce.I love the combination and flavours and the fact that it is boneless, eating made easy.=D It is extremely difficult to find boneless fish unless it is Dory fish or Cod fish.I always order a bowl of soup and omelet to accompany the main dish( fish).

Just looking at the picture, makes me want to go back to JB.The steam fish also taste good.Though,I prefer the fried one.

If you are walking along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and smelt banana cakes, the aroma is definitely coming from this place. That's how I found this bakery as I could not resist the temptation. The first thing that caught my eyes was the wood fired oven in the wall.

The shop still maintains the traditional way of making banana cakes. Thus, the banana cakes are baked to perfection. The banana cake was moist with the right amount of sugar. It's best to buy the big box which is Rm 10.00 as they taste so delicious. Each slice of banana cake cost Rm 1.00.They are sold in boxes of 5 and 10 pieces .

The best part is that all their product is free from preservatives. Thus,it is best to consume them immediately and not keep it.Fun fact: This bakery will be a century old by next year(2019).Tip:go during lunch hour as the banana cakes will be literally fresh out of the oven.

In my opinion, this restaurant serves the mouth watering asam pedas Kluang style .There are also other dishes like ayam goreng berempah( fried chicken) and fried fish.Though, their signature dish is the asam pedas. The gravy is authentic and rich is flavour. The fish is sweet and fresh..However, as usual, there are hardly any places during lunch hour.If you are like me who does not like waiting for their food , it’s best to have late lunch at there. There are not complaints on service and the workers are friendly.

4.Ah Koon Restaurant

This restaurant is famous for it's handmade fried fish cake which is free from preservatives and absolutely delicious(soft and tender inside while crispy on the outside). The fish cake comes with a special thai sauce which compliments the dish.Their noodles taste great too.Tip: If you are ordering a bowl of noodles, there's no need for extra yong tau foo.I made a mistake of grabbing extra of my favourite pieces of yong tau foo.The bowl of noodles is worth every penny you spend. It is filled with loads of ingredients. The is a choice of either dining inside with the A/C or enjoying the cool breeze (depending on the weather) outside.

This restaurant serves authentic Indian cuisine to satisfy customers from different races. There's a myriad of dishes varying from vegetarian dishes to non-veg dishes. My personal favourite is their 'ayam masak merah' .This dish is not an Indian dish but has been altered by adding Indian spices into the mix so the chicken will taste spicy but at the same time sweet.Such an appetising meal!

The mutton varuval is so tender and well cooked.I judge an Indian Restaurant by the papadoms they serve and this restaurant did not let me down. The papadoms are golden fried and crispy.Yummy! One of the hardest dishes to perfect is deep fried bitter gourd. The bitter gourd should be thinly sliced and deep fried in piping hot oil.The bitter gourd should not come out soft and oily. They nailed it.
